A New Start For Moms (ANSFM), a Ventura County Behavioral Health program, provides comprehensive substance use recovery services for pregnant and parenting women and teens with child welfare involvement.

Challenge

How to expand recovery services to include interactive parent-infant relationship support for moms with co-occurring disorders and child welfare involvement?

SOLUTION

We offered Mindful Parenting Groups implementation guidance, intensive facilitator training, and supervision for ANSFM mental health staff serving babies and their mothers navigating substance abuse recovery and mental health issues.

ACTION

Nine staff were trained as facilitators in the group model, providing a platform for moms in recovery to engage with their infants and toddlers in ways that fostered mindful observation, compassionate reflection, and flexible response.

IMPACT

Three staff cohorts participated in Mindful Parenting Groups facilitator training and supervision, allowing for a much-needed expansion of services to meet the needs of ANSFM’s mothers with child welfare involvement.
